joanne2, hey , i collect them(walnuts) anytime i see them for dyeing , but for eating it's in the fall . i never go to much trouble when i make the dye i just smash the hulls up and add water then let it set . i keep it in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. it seems to keep for a long time and just concentrates . a nice dry skin + good concentrated dye .and you shouldnt have to soak it that long. but i leave it over night , then pull it out let it air dry . it will be kinda stiff like when you hang you clothes outside to dry but if you will run it across a rope a little it will soften back up . you can also smash the hulls right into the brained tanned hide and get a good DARK brown but try it on a scrap first so you know what your getting into .

Hey thanks a lot Indian Relic. I hope to do some experimenting soon. I see where a very young girl on the Taxidermy.net mashed up some acorns.. meat shells and all and made like a paste to treat some prepped squirrel skins and they tanned up ok.. fascinating stuff there!
